We come to find now that your AI vacuum cleaner robot can be used to harass you and even spy on you.
There have been several robot vacuum cleaners which were hacked to yell obscenities and insults through the device’s speakers. Confirmed reports of the Chinese Ecovacs Deebot X2  are out. Ecovacs is a leading robotic vacuum brand, and a leader in the space.
The victim, Minnesota lawyer Daniel Swenson, said he heard sound snippets that seemed like a voice coming from his vacuum cleaner. Through the Ecovacs app, he then saw someone, person unknown, accessing the live camera feed of the vacuum as well as the remote-control.
Taking steps, he rebooted the vacuum cleaner and reset the password, just to be on the safe side. But that did not help. Instantly, the vacuum cleaner started moving again.  Only this time, the voice coming from the vacuum cleaner was loud and clear. It was yelling racist obscenities at Swenson and his family. The voice sounded like a teenager according to Swenson.
Swenson said he turned off the vacuum and dumped it in the garage permanently.

Our role here is to be as transparent and honest about AI as possible.  As of now, there is no known true thinking machine that is capable of independent thought in the same sense that humans understand it. It is true that some advanced artificial intelligence systems like GPT-3 and other neural networks can generate responses and simulate human-like conversation, but they do not possess consciousness or true independent thought. AI dubbed systems operate based on advanced processors, predefined algorithms and other forms of data inputs. Think of AI as an engineering dream, a possibility one day. A goal which many work towards or even hope to produce or achieve in the future. We will elaborate  and will further review as many related AI issues as possible. Most of the various developments written about herein have yet to be totally realized or met.  Perhaps it is truly divine, if not lucky for mankind, that we have not as yet totally reached all the various goals or applications for AI as people describe.   We humans need the time and space to develop controls and oversight to monitor that which AI really is or is being directed to go. The best way for us to describe where AI is today, is that man strives to create AI in some form, yes, but we have simply not achieved Artificial Intelligence just yet.  Can we as humans create artificial intelligence, real artificial intelligence? One wonders.  Commercially, when you see companies come to refer to AI and to a host over various product developments, the term AI is clearly overused.  These various companies do not have Artificial Intelligence.  What they have is advanced computing, or smart software or even advanced algorithms.  But is there REALLY some artificial brain, some superhuman intelligence associated with what they have? The artificially intelligent nation-state: Data-hungry, biased tech could prove costly for India A technology that can massively expand state surveillance will inflict deadly harm along the fault lines carved out over the past decade by the Hindutva regime. A spectre is haunting the world: the spectre of Artificial Intelligence. Hardly a day passes by without some celebration of the potential of AI to usher in a new utopia or a clarion call for action on the part of governments, corporations and other stakeholders to mitigate the serious risks it poses to humanity. While larger philosophical debates continue about the appropriateness of the term AI itself, the nature of intelligence, the existential dangers of AI and the feasibility of attaining the holy grail of Artificial General Intelligence that surpass human cognitive abilities, AI is already a reality. It is transforming our lives in routine and banal ways as well as in ways that we cannot perhaps quite fathom. What does AI mean for the nation-state? Arguably, the most significant aspect of the impact of AI is that it will massively expand the surveillance capabilities of the modern nation-state, a process that is already underway in a number of societies. French historian Michel Foucault’s seminal work on the relationship between power and knowledge has shown how the logic of surveillance is central to the emergence of the Western nation-state and all the institutions of modern life, from the prison to the hospital and the school to the office. Well before the new high noon of AI, we have been inhabiting an age of Big Data, in which all dimensions of our lives are tracked, recorded, sliced and diced, combined, commoditised and monetized. In her 2014 book Dragnet Nation, Julia Angwin described this situation, as it held for the US, as one in which vast amounts of information were routinely and indiscriminately gathered by both the state and private actors, with serious implications for the privacy and freedom of citizens. Angwin dates the origin of the dragnet nation to the US security state that took shape in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The dragnet nation was forged through two distinct imperatives: the goal of the state to collect information on its inhabitants for the purposes of security and the goal of private corporations to make profits. With AI, the scale, power, and pace of surveillance and data gathering will expand enormously, intensifying existing concerns about its impact on democracy across the globe. While China is often cited as an example of the possible AI-powered dystopia that awaits us all, no society is necessarily immune from these risks. For India, AI is said to hold remarkable possibilities of all sorts, from simplifying onerous bureaucratic processes to radically democratizing access to education. Perhaps, and hopefully, at least some of this will materialize. A serious concern though is that AI development in India, undergirded by a public-private partnership, will exacerbate discrimination and violence – physical, structural or symbolic – against its most vulnerable groups. Studies, mostly in the American context, show that technologies such as facial recognition or predictive policing often reflect algorithmic bias against particular groups such as African-Americans. With the ascendancy of Hindutva under Narendra Modi since 2014, religious and caste prejudice against minority groups are already thoroughly normalized, and, in fact, are squarely consistent with the ideology of the ruling party. Over the last decade in India, democratic institutions, constitutional safeguards, and rights have been severely undermined by the actions and policies of the Modi government. What happens when, in such a situation, artificially intelligent technologies and applications massively ramp up the potential for religious and caste bias and, consequently, for abuse? What level of detail do we currently have about the datasets on which AI technologies meant for state and private use in India are trained? What kinds of assumptions might be embedded and encoded within them? Will a ruling dispensation notorious for opacity, thin-skinned to the point of paranoia, and known for targeting critics and dissenters even allow any conversation or examination of these matters? Similar worries about India’s ambitious Aadhaar biometric project have not necessarily led to robust safeguards, with concerns still on the horizon. The questions bear a universal urgency, but a few factors make them more acute in the Indian context. In the US and Western Europe, for instance, state actors, as distinct from the government of the day, have a relatively greater degree of autonomy and protections from political pressures, even if they may not entirely be immune from them. With a more robust and well-funded segment of civil society organisations focused on the subject, even if their resources pale in comparison with technology firms, there is at least something of a national conversation on the subject in these societies. India is not unique in its large number of bad actors misusing generative AI for generating images of dubious provenance and spreading fake news about particular groups or individuals. The pronouncements of Donald Trump for years, and now of Elon Musk, as owner and chief spreader of lies on X, the platform he owns, match those of Hindutva trolls in their vitriol and impact on minorities. The main point of contrast between India and Western democracies is that the Indian state under the Modi government has made weaponising misinformation practically an instrument of governance, something it executes through the Bharatiya Janata Party’s “IT cell”, sycophantic media organisations and journalists, and proxies such as online Hindutva groups. At least one analysis suggests that during the last Indian general election of 2024, the positives of AI seemed to outweigh the negatives. We do not know yet at a granular level what the implications of AI will be for modern warfare and national security capabilities of the state. AI Fantasy Versus Reality

AI has truly been heavily promoted, if not over-promoted  such that the concept of Artificial Intelligence in the past years is to the point that its superiority is treated in the media as a forgone conclusion. The idea that algorithms can “think” has become a serious myth, a sci-fi fantasy come to life. The truth is that the reality is much less impressive than the hype. We constantly hear from globalists other elitist institutions that AI is the catalyst for the next or “4th Industrial Revolution” – A technological singularity that will supposedly change every aspect of our society going forward.  We keep waiting for the moment that AI does something significant in terms of advancing human knowledge or making our lives better. The moment never comes. In fact, the globalists keep moving the goalposts for what AI really is. I would note that WEF zealots like Yuval Harari talk about AI like it is the rise of an all-powerful deity. He argues that it does not need to achieve self-awareness or consciousness to be considered a super being or living entity. He even suggests that the popular image of a Terminator-like AI with individual agency and desire is not a legitimate expectation. In other words, AI as it stands today is nothing more than a mindless algorithm, and thus, it is not AI.  But, if every aspect of our world is engineered around digital infrastructures and the populace is taught to put blind faith in the “infallibility” of algorithms then eventually become the robot gods the globalists so desperately desire.  AI dominance is only possible if everyone BELIEVES that AI is legitimate.  Harari essentially admits to this agenda in the speech above. The allure of AI for average people is the pie-in-the-sky promise of freedom from worry or responsibility. As with all narcissists, the global elite love to future-fake and buy popular conformity now on false promises of rewards that will never come. Yes, algorithms are currently used to help laymen do things they could not do before, such as build websites, edit essays, cheat on college exams, create bad artwork and video content, etc. Useful applications are few and far between. For example, the claim that AI is “revolutionizing” medical diagnosis and treatment is far-fetched.  The US, the nation that arguably has the most access to AI tools, is also suffering from declining life expectancy.  We know it is not covid because the virus has a 99.8% average survival rate.  You would think that if AI is so powerful in its ability to identify and treat ailments the average American would be living longer. There is no evidence of a single benefit to AI on a broader social scale. At most, it looks like it will be good at taking jobs away from web developers and McDonald’s drive-thru employees.  The globalist notion that AI is going to create a robotic renaissance of art, music, literature and scientific discovery is utter nonsense.  AI has proven to be nothing more than a tool of mediocre convenience, but that is why it’s so dangerous. I suspect the WEF has changed its ideas about what AI should be because it is not living up to the delusional aspirations, they originally had for it. They have been waiting for a piece of software to come to life and start giving them insights into the mechanics of the universe and they’re starting to realize that’s never going to happen. Instead, the elitists are shifting their focus increasingly into the melding of the human world and the digital world. They want to fabricate the necessity of AI because human dependency on the technology serves the purposes of centralization. But what would this look like? Well, it requires that the population continues to get dumber while AI becomes more integral to society. For example, it is widely accepted at this point that a college education is no indication of intelligence or skill. There are millions of graduates entering the workforce today that display an unsettling level of incompetence. This is partially because college educators are less capable, ideologically biased and the average curriculum has degraded. But, also, we need to start accounting for the number of kids coasting their way through school using ChatGPT and other cheat boxes. They do not need to learn anything, the algorithm and their cell phone camera does it all for them. This trend is disturbing because human beings tend to take the easiest path in every aspect of survival. Most people stopped learning how to grow food because industrial farming does it for us. They stopped learning how to hunt because there are slaughterhouses and refrigerated trucks.  Many Generations Z’s today is incapable of cooking for themselves because they can get takeout to their door anytime they want. They barely talk on the phone or create physical communities anymore because texting and social media have become the intermediaries in human interaction. Yes, everything is “easier”, but that does not mean anything is better.  My great fear – The future that I see coming down the road, is one in which human beings no longer bother to think. AI might be seen as the ultimate accumulation of human knowledge; a massive library or digital brain that does all the searching and thinking for you. Why learn anything when AI “knows everything.” Except, this is a lie. AI does not know everything; it only knows what its programmers want it to know. It only gives you the information its programmers want you to have. The globalists understand this, and they can taste the power that they will have should AI become paramount as an educational platform.  They see it to trick people into abandoning personal development and individual thought. If you had spent any time watching the Olympics on NBC over the past few weeks, you’ve almost certainly seen them: schmaltzy advertisements for the world’s biggest corporations’ new AI tools. From Google’s Gemini to Microsoft’s Copilot and Meta AI, artificial intelligence is inescapable at the recent Games, an event about highlighting the best of human ability. Meta’s begins with a sad lady on a couch asking AI how to prepare for a marathon. In Microsoft’s ad, a pregnant woman asks Copilot to write an email about weight training (are we sensing a theme here?), while a dad asks it to summarize his morning calls, so he has more time to help his son practice boxing. The uplifting music and vaguely inspiring taglines — “Expand your world” and “You, empowered,” respectively — are meant to show how using AI can act as something of a personal assistant, leaving users with more time to spend on the things that matter. As far as Olympics-themed ad campaigns for tech giants go, it is standard stuff. This was not the case with Google’s “Dear Sydney ad,  which centers around a father whose daughter is an aspiring track star and superfan of American Olympic hurdler Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone. The daughter, we learn, wants to write a letter to tell McLaughlin-Levrone just how much she means to her. But in a baffling move, the father then decides to ask Google’s Gemini to simply churn one out for her, turning what could have been a heartwarming father-daughter bonding moment into an opportunity to generate whatever a chatbot’s version of a fan letter is. To say it was not a hit would be an understatement. The Washington Post’s Alexandro Petri’ wrote  that the commercial “makes me want to throw a sledgehammer into the television every time I see it,” and that it was “one of those ads that makes you think, perhaps evolution was a mistake.” “Their pitch is really, ‘hey, we can feel and express emotions, so your daughter doesn’t have to’?” asked sportswriter Shehan Jeyrajah on X. Tech consultant Shelly Palmer, who advises companies on AI, wrote that ‘Dear Sydney’ was “one of the most disturbing commercials I’ve ever seen.” After closing down the comments section on its YouTube page, Google eventually pulled the ad from NBCUniversal’s coverage, writing in a statement to Variety that  “We believe that AI can be a great tool for enhancing human creativity but can never replace it. Our goal was to create an authentic story celebrating Team USA.” It is not the first marketing blunder by a tech company in recent months. This past May, Apple released an ad to promote its new iPad in which a hydraulic press literally crushes physical objects used in creative practices: a piano, paint buckets, a mannequin, a drum set, and cameras, leaving nothing but a single iPad. As the Verge’s Elizabeth Lopatto pointed out at the time, “The message many of us received was this: Apple, a trillion-dollar behemoth, will crush everything beautiful and human, everything that’s a pleasure to look at and touch, and all that will be left is a skinny glass and metal slab.” It wasn’t a great look, considering widespread fears over how technology like AI, which Apple has invested heavily in, will replace jobs and make existing ones worse. Marketing tactics that boast about AI’s ability to render meaningful activities — like, say, painting, or writing a letter with your daughter — worth little more than a single button-click come across as deeply tone-deaf to a population who is already anxious about the future of the technology. According to a 2023 Pew survey, 52 percent of Americans said that they were more concerned than excited about the increased use of AI in their daily lives. Though its boosters have spent the past two years claiming that artificial intelligence will soon be the “great equalizer” of creativity, turning average joes into artistic geniuses, and that it provides all the perks of a personal assistant with the push of a button, signs as of late point instead to the idea that AI is a bubble that may be on the verge of bursting. The stock market’s heavy losses this week were led by tech companies who have been bullish on AI like chipmaker Nvidia and Amazon, in part due to the extraordinarily high cost of running AI models (it’s estimated that OpenAI spends $700,000 per day to run ChatGPT, and the more it’s used, the higher the cost), and the economic reality that at some point, the bill has to be paid. The tone of the ads recall those for crypto, Web3, and the metaverse that were omnipresent during the 2022 Super Bowl, drafting a cadre of celebrities to shill unregulated currency for the likes of FTX, Coinbase, and Crypto.com. Both heralded their respective technologies as the next great innovation that will make humans hyper-productive (in the case of AI) and rich (both). Since then, following a massive downturn in crypto prices and all three companies either bankrupt or mired in scandal, crypto was completely absent from the 2023 and 2024 Super Bowls. Even back in 2022, people criticized the ads for their tone-deafness and obvious fraudulence: They “feel like Pets.com all over again,” per Wired, citing the notorious tech bubble of the 2000s. Much like crypto, the AI tools peddled by tech companies today are environmental disasters  using up as much energy as an entire country. That is expected to double by 2026, and it also includes the millions of gallons of water needed to cool the equipment. In today’s highly competitive computer and AI market, nearly all advancements in computer science will-should-can be used for the furtherment or even betterment  of AI development.  Of course, just as one would expect.  Are we there yet? No, but we’re getting closer.  And even though the many associated companies like to tout their new wares, their various developments and breakthroughs, the truth is that even while many new, even fantastic technologies are now being developed, it is also not true that any new computer technology by default, automatically leads to Artificial Intelligence.  It does not. Yes, computer technology marches forward on an ever-expanding basis, on virtually daily.  However one cannot just merely assume that the various new developments in computing by default create standalone AI. They do not.  Below is a reprint of a new breakthrough type of ‘optical” processor made in China.  We would like to draw your attention to the multiple references is has to AI.  It would be important to note that, for as many times that AI is referenced, the fact is that the chip development is NOT AI by itself. Poised to break the plateauing of Moore’s Law, integrated photonic neural networks have shown the potential to achieve superior processing speeds and high energy efficiency. However, it has suffered severely limited computing capability and scalability such that only simple tasks and shallow models have been realized experimentally…”  In other words, some things are great and some things, not so much.

Worries about AI often imagine doomsday kinds of  scenarios where robotic systems elude human control, safety or even human understanding. Short of those nightmares, there are nearer-term harms which we need to  take seriously and how AI could jeopardize public discourse through misinformation; cement biases in financial decisions, judging or hiring practices, or even disrupt creative industries. However, we forsee a different, but no less urgent, class of risks and applications or usage stemming from “relationships” with nonhuman agents.  AI companionship is no longer theoretical.  Analsys of a million ChatGPt interaction logs reveals that the second most populare use of AI IS sexual role-playing.  We are already starting to invite Ais into our live as friends, lovers, mentors, therapists, and teachers. Will it be easier to retreat to a replicant of a deceased partner than to navigate the confusing and painful realities of human relationships? Indeed, the AI companionship provider Replika was born from an attempt to resurrect a deceased best friend and now provides companions to millions of users. In the face of this power imbalance, can we meaningfully consent to engaging in an AI relationship, especially when for many the alternative is nothing at all?  As AI researchers working closely with policymakers, we are struck by the lack of interest lawmakers have shown in the harms arising from this future. We are still unprepared to respond to these risks because we do not fully understand them. What’s needed is a new scientific inquiry at the intersection of technology, psychology, and law—and perhaps new approaches to AI regulation. Why are AI companions being so addictive?  As addictive as platforms powered by recommender systems may seem today, TikTok and its rivals are still bottlenecked by human content. While alarms have been raised in the past about “addiction” to novels, television, internet, smartphones, and social media, all these forms of media are similarly limited by human capacity. Generative AI is different. It can endlessly generate realistic content on the fly, optimized to suit the precise preferences of whoever it’s interacting with.  The allure of AI lies in its ability to identify our desires and serve them up to us whenever and however we wish. AI has no preferences or personality of its own, instead reflecting whatever users believe it to be; a phenomenon knows by researchers as “sycophancy”. Research has shown that those who perceive or desire to have AI to have caring motives will use language that precisely elicits this behavior. This creates an echo chamber of affection that threatens to be extremely addictive. Why engage in the give and take of being with another person when we can simply take? Repeated interactions with sycophantic companions may atrophy the part of us capable of engaging fully with other humans who have real desires and dreams of their own, leading to what we might call “digital attachment disorder.” Investigating the incentives driving addictive products. Addressing the harm that AI companions could pose requires a thorough understanding of the economic and psychological incentives pushing forward their development. Until we appreciate these drivers of AI addiction, it will remain impossible for us to create effective policies.  It is no accident that internet platforms are addictive—deliberate design choices, known as “dark patterns,” are made to maximize user engagement. We expect similar incentives to create AI companions that provide hedonism as a service. This raises two separate questions related to AI. What design choices will be used to make AI companions engaging and addictive? And how will these addictive companions affect the people who use them?  Interdisciplinary study that builds on research into dark patterns in social media is needed to understand this psychological dimension of AI. Introduction

Over the last five years, there seems to be a serious rush towards the creation of robots or even machines which can think on their own.  These various proponents have conveniently dubbed their developments “Artificial Intelligence”.  However, when one looks more closely at that term, there becomes several outstanding issues, even flaws or misrepresentations which get exposed. All one needs to do is to carefully look at what any company or authority is representing in the use of that term. What is their true motivation going forward?  Is it for further or future investment into their enterprise or business? Is it to motivate the public into buying their stock or to make an investment? Is it to extol for some commercial endeavor or advantage?  AI is a term which many entities use or look to throw around, but the truth is that while they may be promoting an aspect or element of advanced computing, it still is not real AI, as you would understand it.  Often, it is a development which may potentially one day lead to AI, but it is not actually standalone Artificial Intelligence just yet.  Our goal is to shed new light about AI by highlighting those who happen to have the most to gain in looking to control the use or extension of AI, as it is currently known. It is also important to note that as of today there are no specific licensing bodies dedicated solely to regulating the use of artificial intelligence. However, there are ongoing discussions and efforts by various organizations, governments, and industry stakeholders to establish guidelines, standards, and regulations for the ethical and responsible development and deployment of AI technologies. It is important to stay informed about the evolving landscape of AI governance and compliance to ensure the long-term ethical and lawful use of AI applications  takes place going forward. AI, by itself, is not inherently dangerous to humans; at least not yet.  The potential risks associated with AI stem from how it is developed, deployed and even used. Issues such as bias in AI algorithms, lack of transparency, data collection and privacy concerns, and the potential misuse of AI technology. These can pose risks to individuals and society overall. It is crucial for governments, developers, policymakers, and even users to prioritize ethical considerations, transparency, and accountability in the development and deployment of AI. It is important to mitigate the potential dangers of AI and ensure that the responsible use of AI is for the benefit of humanity overall. AI, as it currently exists, it is not capable of making moral decisions in the same way that humans do. AI systems operate based on algorithms and data inputs, and their decision-making processes is guided by predefined rules and objectives set by their developers (READ: HUMANS). While AI can be programmed to follow ethical guidelines and rules, AI lacks the ability to truly understand complex moral concepts, empathy, and context in the same way that humans do.
